2007 in review

1. What did you do in 2007 that you'd never done before?

Signed a lease!

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

Was never much into resolutions. I should always strive to be better, y'know? Why wait until now?

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Not that I can think of, nope. Perhaps some wives of some coworkers, but I can't even remember if they were this year or last.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

Yeah, in August. Well, I guess it depends on how you define close, but given how often he still pops into mind, I'd say yes.

5. What countries did you visit?

Wow, I really didn't travel much this year, did I? Not only did I not visit any countries, but I don't think I've been further than Boston and New Hampshire to the north and east, and DC to the south and west until I went to Florida a few weeks ago. But that's OK.

6. What would you like to have in 2008 that you lacked in 2007?

Man, I'm so bad at thinking of things I want for myself. Most things I can think of here are big and political. Hmm. How about a good community to pray with on Shabbat mornings?

7. What date from 2007 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

December 20th! Put down a deposit on my new apartment and got some good news at work!

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Signing a lease! (Man, this quiz would've gone much differently had December not happened the way it did.)

9. What was your biggest failure?

Not following through with things I've promised myself and others. For example, there's a particular web site I've been wanting to make for over two years now...

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

I hurt my wrist during a frisbee game in July, probably sprained. And it somehow never got all better. And I had more colds in a year than I've had since college. But on the whole, I'm feeling healthier than I was a year ago, and that's not something I say frequently.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

The apartment? No, let's try to get onto another subject. The phone I was lusting after for about 6 months was pretty awesome. The identical replacement I got when that one got ruined in a rainstorm was pretty awesome too.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

Everyone! (Actually, there's a particular someone who I'm quite proud of, but she hates sappiness and stuff, so I won't mention her here.) Yay, everyone! Seriously, I know some great people.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

Well, there was that incident in July. Which I've put behind me now.

14. Where did most of your money go?

Savings! Now to be all sucked out on furniture and such...

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

August, as usual.

16. What song will always remind you of 2007?

Stuck Between Stations by The Hold Steady.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

Happier or sadder? Happier.
Older or wiser? I hope so.
Thinner or fatter? Fatter.
Richer or poorer? Richer...for now.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Gone to DC. Gone to sleep earlier. Gone to sleep later. Laundry.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Getting used to the status quo. Except not really. It was appropriate for much of 2007, but it will be less so in 2008.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

I had quite an eventful afternoon at the Catholic Stepfamily. As usual, except not quite. Good times, though.

21. How will you be spending New Year's Eve?

Headed south!

22. Did you fall in love in 2007?

Not this year.

23. How many one-night stands?

Twice as many as in 2006!

24. What was your favorite TV program?

Most recently, Kid Nation! (Seriously!) Before that, Gilmore Girls. Also awesome were Law & Order SVU, which I continued to like, and House, which I finally found this year.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

No. (Not even the people from #13 above.) Life really is too short.

26. What was the best book you read?

Erm, I guess I should add reading more to that resolution up there? I read all the time, but rarely full-length books, and even less often novels. It's possible that the only two novels I read for this first time this year were Harry Potter 7 and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 3. Both were quite good. Best non-fiction might've been The Gatekeepers. (Thanks for the recommendation!)

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Was it really this year that I started to like both Cold War Kids and The Hold Steady? I thought it was late 2006, but file timestamps imply otherwise. Well, awesome. They were the soundtrack to my year...when I wasn't listening to The Decemberists.

28. What did you want and get? Stability? More Threadless shirts...yeah, let's go with that.

29. What did you want and not get?

Motivation for long-term constructive uses of free time.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?

I think Knocked Up was the only one I saw.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I turned 26 almost a year ago, and had a fantastic time. That was a great weekend in New York, too.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

(Again, with the thinking about politics for these questions that are supposed to be personal...) I don't know about "immeasurably", but there are 3 or 4 people I have in mind right now who I'm gradually growing apart from, and an additional 1 or 2 conversations with each of them this year would've been fantastic.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2007?

More Threadless. Less sweatpants. More khakis. Same old sneakers. And still sweatpants sometimes.

34. What kept you sane?

An incredible network of friends, every member of which provides something to my life that would be missing without them. I don't think you realize how much I've relyed on many of you, as individuals, this year.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

I know I'm going about halfway back into 2006 for these, but Al Gore and Warren Buffett. I really hope they set an example for other people who have varying sorts of power in the world to use it to fix things, and soon. There's not a particular path for everyone, but if you have the ear of millions or the money to make significant changes, you have to use it.

(That's what you meant by "fancy", right?)

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

People in power lying, cheating, manipulating, and abusing their constituencies as much as they feel they can get away with it. No one on any side of an issue coming out and taking a public stand for what they really feel, and being willing to take the flak or the praise for it.

37. Who did you miss?

Way, way too many to list.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

Hm. There are a few people I have in mind for this. But let's go with Ariel, who I technically met in 1992, and again in 1999. He reappeared in my life this summer after his stint in the Peace Corps, and I'm quite glad.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2007:

Your friends are always right. This is mainly because they always aggregately take all possible sides to all issues. (Except the obvious ones.) But somehow, in the end, you come around and agree with all of them.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:

I kind of want to put something instrumental here, since the sound of music matters so much more to me than the text of it. Man, gotta think of something...

Yeah, I'm gonna cop out here. The lyrics to Tamacun by Rodrigo y Gabriela are perfect. Yeah.

Happy 2008!!
