(no subject)

Oy, this was a rough day. Busy, stressful, deadline-panicking day at work. Plus stressful interactions with peers. Even the package delivery I received (more on that later) only marginally cheered me up. I left work about a half hour earlier than I meant to, when I'm usually REALLY good at meeting my departure time on Fridays.

Got home, cooked a bit of food really quickly, watching the clock count down to Shabbat faster than I need it to. Go to turn off my cell phone, realize I hadn't even turned it on today. This is also stress-inducing, because I sometimes have irrational fears about being unreachable. (Nevermind that I was available via email all day.) So I turn my phone on. One message, from just 5 or 10 minutes earlier.

"Hi, Josh, it's Mom. Just called to let you know that [your cousin] had her baby today. A healthy boy named Jonah. It wasn't only today, actually; it was just now. About an hour or two ago."

I'm not that close to this cousin. I only see her once a year or so, and possibly not at all since she announced she was pregnant. Even when we were younger and saw each other more we weren't particularly close because she's over 10 years older than me, so we never had tons in common. It had honestly slipped my mind a bit that she was pregnant (though if you'd asked me point-blank whether she was, I'm sure I would have remembered). I certainly didn't know whether the due date was now or a month or two from now.

Talk about an unexpected way to get a smile on your face at the end of a hard day.
